R&B: A CULTURAL MUSICAL LEGACY

Rhythm and Blues, affectionatly called R&B, is a genre of music that encompasses a wide range of musical styles and the rich history of African Americans and their cultural and political exper-iences in the United States. Originally referred to as "race music", and performed almost exclusively to Black audiences, presently R&B is one of the most popular forms of music in the world.

Rhythm and Blues is another cultural expression of African people that grew out of previous music forms. The origins of Rhythm and Blues date back to the "Negro Spirituals". These were songs that were often Bible based that spoke in code of salvation and being free. The religious influence is still evident. Countless past and present artists began singing in the church.

The Spirituals grew into "The Blues". The term itself is applied to melonchony or sadness. Much of which is a result of the overall experience in America. The emotionally charged manner in which to music was sung is what separated it from previous forms. The music came from the "soul". The content would express the struggles associated with living in poverty, the dreams of getting out of it, successes to failures in life and relationships.

The term Rhythm and Blues has been used to describe several different styles of music over the decades that was performed by African Americans. In the 50's it was they way they performed that laid way for what became Rock and Roll. Later it was used to describe what became known as soul or funk of the 70's. It was revised again in the 80's when the music began to merge several different styles of music of the past with disco, pop and then Hip-Hop. In the 90's, Hip-Hop was its biggest influence.
Argueably, moreso than any genre, R&B has gone through more transformations and definitions than any other genre and the continue to the present day. What will be presented on this page, is the brand of R&B that centers on balanced lyrical social commentary with head nodding rhythms. As part of the legacy, music was more than entertainment, it spoke to the joys and pains of life. Our goal is to capture that and present it to listeners in an tasteful and enjoyable fashion. Thanks for tuning in. You are appreciated.
